One tangerine weighing about 110 grams contains 32 milligrams of vitamin C which is half the recommended daily allowance. Vitamin C plays an essential role in the synthesis of collagen and elastin in our body. Collagen and elastin are proteins which form our skin, muscles and other connective tissues. This is a powerful antioxidant which helps the body in the removal of free radicals that threaten healthy cells. It accelerates wound healing and help prevent neurodegenerative diseases, arthritis, colds and flu. Many studies has shown a link between increased intake of vitamin C and reduced occurrence of of several types of cancer.

Tangerines are rich in vitamin A and folic acid. One tangerine contains 16 % of the daily dose of vitamin A and 5 % of the daily recommended amount of folic acid.

From minerals, in this fruit are present potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and iron.
One big tangerine brings 199 mg or 6 % of the daily recommended amounts of potassium, needed to balance fluid levels in the body and regulate blood pressure. It also contains 44 mg or four percent of the daily value of calcium, necessary for building and maintaining bone density.

Tangerines help fight the bad cholesterol and protect the heart

Tangerines are an excellent source of pectin, which prevents the absorption of cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels, and thus the risk of obesity.

Prolong the feeling of satiety

In addition to vitamins, this autumn fruits are rich in fiber and water which gives a longer feeling of satiety. Pectin in it prevents the growth of blood sugar levels, and therefore the feeling of hunger. It is recommended to people who want to lose weight, but also to those who want to stay fit.

The best choice for oily skin

Tangerines contain antioxidants that prevent the release of free radicals and cracking of skin, and are good for skin care. Essential oils are especially effective. They help with oily and problematic skin by controlling sebum secretion and clean clogged pores. It is important to note that essential oil is not phototoxic and can be applied on skin before sun exposure.

Tangerines in aromatherapy

Essential oil of tangerine is obtained by cold pressing the raw bark of fruit.

This sweet-smelling oil is used as air freshener, but also helps with the whole range of problems:

  • soothes tension and anxiety
  • reduces restlessness, especially in hyperactive children
  • improves liver function
  • applying to the skin counteracts development of acne
  • helps with insomnia
  • eases the symptoms of rheumatism and arthritis
  • helps with diarrhea, constipation and flatulence

Essential oil of tangerine is used in lotions for cleaning and toning the skin, during pregnancy to prevent stretch marks and is added to the bath for relaxation. The oil is very mild and therefore is very convenient for small children - even babies! It helps with insomnia, stress and depression. In addition to oral use, for insomnia, you can also use the diffuser, which allows you to fill in a bedroom with a fine spray of tangerine oil  - that is suitable (and recommended) for a child's room.
In stressful situations simply rub 1-2 drops of tangerine oil on the solar plexus and wrists (pure essential oils, without the addition of vegetable oil). One drop can be placed on the neck, in order to inhale this "happy" citrus scent.

It is important not to throw the peel of tangerine, in case of unsprayed fruit. Chop peeled rind into small pieces and dry them in a protected area. When dry, it can be added to cakes, compotes, teas or baths for recovery

Caution!
When buying, be careful, because tangerines in the stores tend to be treated with various pesticides. Preferably buy organically grown tangerines, or before consuming, soak in cold water
for two hours.
